La Verne, Los Angeles County
La Verne began in 1887 as Lordsburg, named for its promoter, Isaac Lord. When his grand hotel failed to attract guests, members of the Church of the Brethren bought it in 1891 and opened the college that became the University of La Verne. Residents changed the name of the town in 1917. The church in the final scene of The Graduate stands on D Street.
